カンブリア紀の覇者としても知られるアノマロカリスですが、実は口は丈夫ではなく、三葉虫のような堅いものは食べられなかったのではないかという発表がありました。

Earth's First Great Predator Wasn't The meters-long, carnivorous "shrimp" from hell that once ruled the seas of Earth a half billion years ago may have been a real softy, it turns out. A new 3-D modeling of the mouth parts of the Anomalocaris, along with evidence that these parts were not hard like teeth, but flexible, shows that the famed predator could not have been munching on the hard shells of trilobites and other such creatures of the early seas.

アノマロカリスといえば、体長１メートルほどもあるエビのお化けのような生き物で、カンブリア紀の海を泳ぎながら、三葉虫などをむしゃむしゃと食べていたというイメージでした。 このほど、その口の構造をモデリングしたところ、堅いものをかじるほど丈夫ではなく、むしろ柔軟な構造であったことがわかったそうです。胃の内容物などの痕跡からも、これまで堅いものを食べた証拠は無いそうで、恐ろしい捕食者という従来のイメージは転換を促されそうです。 ただ、では何を食べていたかは、これからの謎。今後が楽しみです。
